What is DevOps?
Digital business models, processes and smart services are mainly based on IT and software. Due to the agility of our times, requirements and surrounding conditions change frequently and very rapidly. In this light, close cooperation and interlocking of software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) with business is becoming an increasingly important competitive factor.
DevOps describes a joint approach to organisational and process improvement in the areas of development and operations. DevOps is coined from the terms development and operations. The purpose of DevOps is to enable a more effective and efficient cooperation between development and operations and the business through joint procedures, processes and tools. DevOps improves the quality, speed and flexibility of development and delivery, as well as the togetherness of the participating teams.
The fundamental philosophy behind DevOps aims to create an understanding of the activities of development and operations as a continuous system and to provide through iterative procedures the agility necessary today in implementing the customer requirements all the way to value-creating operations. For this purpose, a cross-functional culture of continual improvement and experimentation will be created.
According to SERVIEW's interpretation, DevOps thus gives a totally new definition to the cooperation between projects, operations and the business. It concerns the alignment of all activities, flows and (partial) results necessary for this interplay. Thus, DevOps signifies a culture change in ways of the overarching cooperation. The main purpose is to continuously find and define the best logical flow through the organisation, in order to achieve the defined results as efficiently as possible. A flow without disruptive interruptions or backflows, for all projects (such as application development, change transition operations, deployment etc.) and all daily tasks (incidents, IT support, events, problems etc.).
DevOps is not a new framework. It rather intelligently brings together established approaches, such as SCRUM, LEAN and ITIL, intelligently in a system, in order to enable the service organisation to deliver the rapidness and agility the customer needs while maintaining good quality. In addition, DevOps closely interlocks business, development and operations in all activities.
